OpenAI announced ChatGPT – generative AI based on large language models (LLM), trained to conduct real-life conversations – in late 2022 and started to explode early this year. Soon after, many large technology companies also launched chatbots similar to Google with Bard, Microsoft with Bing Chat, xAI with Grok, Baidu with Ernie Bot.

The emergence of generative AI helps erase the image of boring, inflexible artificial intelligence assistants that have existed for decades. From a complex technology, artificial intelligence has become an intuitive, accessible tool, opening up a series of application trends in life. In the report on prominent search trends in Vietnam 2023, Google assessed that AI has become a hot topic. “The competition of many leading technology companies to bring AI applications to end users has attracted great attention and led to the popularity of AI-related keywords on Google Search 2023”, reports the report stated. Among them, Vietnamese people are interested in “the benefits of AI”, “what is in the field of AI” or how to apply AI in specific fields.

AI creates work and entertainment

Since January, when OpenAI did not support registration in Vietnam, many people sought to create or buy accounts to experience ChatGPT . Taking advantage of AI’s ability to receive, process and express content in text form, users can write essays, poems, summarize reports, even compose literary works and write articles.

At schools, chatbots are used by both teachers and students as support tools in subjects that need to summarize large amounts of information. Meanwhile, with just a few keywords suggested to AI, organizational and business leaders can prepare speeches for employees with appropriate style.

Some Vietnamese writers said they used ChatGPT tocompile a table of contents and think about topics. Although it cannot create emotional text like humans, AI is still considered an assistant that helps save significant labor time.

In addition, many people also use chatbots to look up information instead of searching via Google or Bing Search. Some translators believe that AI’s translation capabilities are more effective than specialized translation applications. The reason is that instead of translating each word or phrase, the AI tool can understand the context of the article, thereby providing the most fluent and easy-to-understand expression. In September, a translation application by two Vietnamese international students received an investment of tens of billions of dong in the US, thanks to combining AI to convert Vietnamese text into English and 100 different languages.

Trend of using AI to create images

At the beginning of 2023, a set of cat mascot photos caused a stir on social networks when many people thought this was a cat mascot statue welcoming the new year in Ninh Thuan province. In fact, the photo was created using the tool Midjourney .

The trend of using AI painting software has appeared since 2022, but only revolves around a few technology enthusiast groups. However, with the explosion of ChatGPT, a series of image creation tools will be upgraded and attract a large number of users in 2023. With just the right command in text form, anyone can play the role of an artist to Be creative in many styles, such as designing your own interior, fashion, and even drawing comics without needing artistic talent.

The trend of AI creating images also gave birth to a new profession in Vietnam: prompt engineer . The prompt maker does not necessarily need to know coding or programming, but needs foreign languages and good expression skills to communicate effectively with artificial intelligence applications. Combining existing specialized background knowledge, prompt engineers will “teach” AI to perfect products, meeting the needs of each specific field in society. In addition, some organizations also take advantage of image-generating AI to recreate ancient architecture, restore pictures and works of art that have historical Vietnamese significance but have degraded over time.

However, experts assess that AI tools that generate photos and videos can pose a risk of deepfake fraud.

The trend of using AI to create personal avatars

Avatar design applications using artificial intelligence have been around for a long time, but have exploded and attracted a large number of users thanks to the integration of artificial intelligence, especially in the second half of 2023.

In mid-July, Remini , an application that turns selfies into professional avatars, surpassed the social network Threads to climb to number one on the App Store. In Vietnam, the software is also in the top 6 most installed photo editing tools. Just upload 7 photos, Remini will support creating portraits with options for style, outfit, age, and skin color.

In August, social networks Facebook and Instagram were filled with anime-style photos created by Loopsie . Later this month, Loopsie rose to become the most downloaded application on the App Store in Vietnam. Unlike its competitors, Loopsie not only focuses on the face but also transforms the surrounding scene, making the photo more beautiful and colorful. By October, Zalo integrated the AI Avatar feature for users to design avatars in six different styles.

However, security experts also recommend that users be cautious when providing personal photos to AI. In the context of deepfake attacks flourishing, bad guys can create fake images, fake news, and video calls pretending to be someone else. “Once data is exploited, the person who suffers is not only the person themselves, but also family, friends and people around,” warn experts of the Anti-Fraud project.
