“I have mixed feelings about Sam. The power ring may be broken,” Elon Musk said at the New York Times Dealbook Summit event on November 29, referring to the ring in the movie The Lord of the Rings .

The American billionaire said he did not have inside information about why OpenAI deposed Sam Altman and then brought this CEO back to his position. However, he is concerned about the back story for the future of artificial intelligence.

“I want to know why Ilya Sutskever feels so strongly that he wants to fight Sam. That sounds serious, but I don’t think it’s trivial either. I’m worried that there’s something dangerous behind it, related to AI elements they discovered”.

Previously, on November 24, Musk also asked questions about the fluctuations at OpenAI. The billionaire believes ” something scary ” prompted Sutskever, OpenAI’s co-founder and chief scientist, to oust Altman.

On November 20, he also spoke up about the OpenAI board of directors suddenly firing the CEO. “I am very worried. Ilya is a moral person and does not desire power. He would not take such drastic action unless absolutely necessary. The world needs to know if OpenAI possesses something that endangers humanity,” Musk wrote.

Elon Musk has long warned about the dangers of AI for humanity, although he affirmed that this technology has many good points. He co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and helped attract many key talents, including Sutskever, but left the company a few years later due to disagreements.

OpenAI has not yet revealed the reason for Sam Altman’s dismissal. However, Reuters cited internal sources as saying that OpenAI CTO Mira Murati told employees that a confidential letter, sent by some OpenAI researchers to the former board of directors, about the breakthrough of the Q* project (Q -Star) spurred them into action and made the decision to depose Altman.

Q* is artificial general intelligence ( AGI ) developed by OpenAI in parallel with ChatGPT. According to the company’s definition, AGI is an omnipotent super-intelligence system, smarter than humans. Its excellent performance made many people optimistic about the future of super intelligence, but others were worried that Q* could threaten humanity, so they sent a warning letter.
