“After time passed, I realized the company could operate without me. That was really nice,” Sam Altman told The Verge on November 29. “I returned to OpenAI without feeling stressed or burdened that I had to do what was necessary, or that I was important to the company’s survival.”

Altman was suddenly fired by the OpenAI board of directors on November 17. After 5 days, under pressure from more than 700 employees to quit , the company invited him back to the CEO position. He said he felt “selfishly satisfied” with that development. However, the first feeling when accepting the invitation from the OpenAI board of directors “was like a kind of challenge”.

“It was like: ‘Oh my god, I’m hurt and angry. This is so bad’. But then, I immediately changed my mind, that I really loved the company, and put all my effort into it.” This has been going on for the past four and a half years and will last much longer,” Altman said.

He also said it took a few minutes to shape his emotions, get rid of negative thoughts, overcome his ego and accept returning to run the company.

Altman declined to answer questions about why he was fired. Instead, he said the company’s new board “will conduct an independent review” and will announce its reasons later.

“I think this is very important. The review process is still going on. I’m happy to talk about anything looking forward. I’m also happy to talk about what happened, but not now,” Sam Altman said.

Referring to Ilya Sutskever , OpenAI’s chief scientist and the man behind the CEO’s ouster, Altman said: “I love and respect Ilya. I think he is a guiding light in the field and a precious gem. I have no grudge against him.”
